FAA Updates Recreational Drone Guidance Near Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration announced updated guidance this week for recreational drone operators flying near airports.

Under the new guidance, pilots must use the B4UFLY app or LAANC authorization system before flying within five miles of any airport. The FAA emphasized this applies to all drones, regardless of weight class.

“Safety remains our top priority,” said an FAA spokesperson. “These updates help recreational flyers understand their responsibilities.”

Key points from the update include mandatory altitude limits of 400 feet AGL and requirements to maintain visual line of sight at all times. The agency also reminded operators that flying over people and moving vehicles remains prohibited without proper waivers.

Drone registration through FAA DroneZone continues to be required for aircraft weighing over 0.55 pounds.
